Intermediate Level Indoor Karting

So, you’ve done a few laps, and can control the indoor kart. Now we need to learn how you can improve your lap times, the main areas to look at for an improving driver are racing lines, and smoothness. If you keep in mind what is written in this article, YOU can examine your own driving to a point. Remember, you are still at quite a basic level, and I might be moving too quick, but just take it one step at a time!

Braking with an Indoor Kart

A lot of new karters don’t know how to brake properly, as simple as it sounds, you can always improve. As you arrive into the corner, press the pedal firmly, if you spin you have pressed too hard! Call the marshals! If you run wide you have not pressed it enough! Now, find a point where u brake hard, but don’t spin. If you do it correctly, it’s likely you will arrive into the corner too slowly, so next lap around BRAKE LATER with the same level of force. Everyone’s skills of braking are different, so it’s hard to teach without seeing your style.

Lines

The most common mistakes new karters make is not using all of the track, but you must use every single inch to improve your times. Come from the outside of the corner, to the inside, and on the exit you will naturally move towards the outside. Just remember, every time you move off this ideal line you loose speed, and your mates won’t be quite so impressed with your times! We will cover more advanced racing lines in the advanced section, but for now, just remember don’t slide the kart!

DIAGRAM

As a fairly basic rule, if you get the chance to see a marshal driving, watch him like a hawk, and maybe chat to him about the best lines to take! If you see him following my smoothness rules, most likely he is experienced at the circuit, and try to have a quick chat! Just remember, its unlikely that he is very experienced, so don’t follow everything they say! By this point, you should be fairly fast! If you are happy with your lines and can brake like a god, time to move to the advanced section!
