mastered indoor karts before
moving on to race 2 strokes
I have written this in 3 sections,
Basic, Intermediate
and Expert.
Feel free to jump to the level you feel you are at, but I
recommend you read them all
Whether you are
looking for a career in motor sport, want to move to 2 stroke
kart racing, or just want to have a laugh with your mates
and WIN. EVERYONE needs to start with the basics to dealing
with an indoor kart.
Getting in
Yes, beleive it or not you can get this
wrong. Step in the seat with your right foot and place your
right hand on the back of the seat, left hand on the top of
the steering wheel. Now carefully lower yourself in, being
sure to avoid kicking the track rods, crashing with no steering
on your first lap out of the pits is a sure way to lower your
confidence! Now lean back, almost ALL first time drivers lean
over the steering wheel, because they think it improves aerodynamics.
It doesn’t. it affects the handling of the kart, and
makes you look like a novice.
How to hold the wheel
Most of you will think you already know,
but you would be amazed at how many people I see holding the
wheel completely wrong, which affects their performance, big
time. Place your hands on the wheel at the quarter to 3 position,
and keep them there don’t take your hands off the wheel,
and hold the wheel loosely, not with a death-grip, or you
will feel it in your forearms the next day! When you get to
a more advanced level, you will find out that how you hold
the steering wheel affects the physics of the kart, but lets
leave that for today, shall we?
First lap out of the pits
If this is your first time ever in a kart,
it might feel fairly fast, so just take your time, and feel
the grip you have.
Once you are confident, you will naturally
want to put your foot down, but remember even though sliding
feels faster, it really isn’t. You will have to trust
me on this one, all you have to do is just remember to be
smooth with the steering, brakes and throttle. For a very
basic rule, the more boring you look, the faster you will
go. Just remember not to press both brake and throttle at
the same time! Its very slow, and wont make the marshals very
happy!
Now you can control the kart, and don’t
look like a fool, we can move to the intermediate section!
